KUALA LUMPUR: Every month, at least five doctors are found to be suffering from mental illnesses, director-general of health Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican said.
He said these doctors were either psychotic or neurotic but still managed to get into medical schools because these schools were not screening students meticulously enough.
“When the doctors complete their two-year housemanship and their applications are submitted for registration with the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC), they fail to get registered.
“Their supervisors do not certify them as fit to be registered because of indiscipline and poor attitude arising from mental health problems.
“The mental cases range from psychotic to neurotic. Psychotic cases include delusions and hallucinations, and neurotic behaviour includes anxiety, fear and anger due to the competitive environment,” said Dr Ismail.
These medical graduates, totalling about 60 cases a year, are unable to cope with their housemanship as they may have been pressured by their parents to take up medicine.
Dr Ismail said it was disheartening to note this emerging trend due to an inefficient selection process, adding that the mental cases were referred to the Medical Review Panel (MRP).
Since many of these graduates have spent a lot of money on their medical education, the MRP may extend their housemanship and at the same time send them for psychiatric treatment.
“In the event they are assigned to work, they will be thoroughly supervised and counselled by experts and given light duties until their mental condition improves.
“I am not so sure whether we can identify those with attitude problems during an interview unless such problems are obvious,” Dr Ismail said at a forum on Training Future Doctors: Have we got it right?”
About 2,000 medical doctors are registered annually from 21 local medical schools and 400 recognised schools overseas.
Different medical schools around the world have different selection criteria for their students, Dr Ismail said.
However, he said that the ministry was also planning some form of examination to check their attitude, knowledge and experience after they complete their final examination.
Most of the mentally ill students, he said, could have undergone pressure and depression while studying and faced difficulty in coping in a hospital environment.
The other weakness was a lack of proficiency in the English language.
Higher Education director-general Prof Datuk Dr Radin Umar Radin Sohadi said the ministry was currently reviewing universities’ curricula to ensure high standards in medical education and training for doctors.
“Uppermost on our minds will be the safety and well-being of patients,” he said.

You have no bloody right to condemn DATO SRI Samy Vellu for any reason.What have you done for our community and that will be nothing. Prove that you are actually doing something not only talking because everyone can talk but only some will actually get down to the field to work.Take a second and think there is definitely some part of your life or your family members life that MIC have helped along the road.Why people like you would not want to mention the things that you benefited from and only like to highlight the one that didn’t, isn’t that being hypocrite. If you cant do anything for the community might as well just take a step back rather than condemning others.Let your service or your action speak more than the useless word that you uttered when you feel bored in your blogspot.But yes, I think you have met your target to make popular statements because people are talking about and just to let you they think it is stupid as well. I would like state a saying “dogs always like to chase the car but once they manage to do so they don’t know what to do with them but the car continues to the destiny”.Please try to be the car next time.

Umno suspends Ahmad three years
KUALA LUMPUR: Umno has suspended Bukit Bendera division chief Datuk Ahmad Ismail three years over his alleged racist remarks about the Chinese.
The decision was reached at a special meeting of the Umno supreme council held at the PWTC Wednesday afternoon. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi chaired the meeting that lasted almost three hours.
As a result of the suspension, Ahmad will be stripped of all party posts and voting rights. He will remain an ordinary member however.
Abdullah told a press conference after the meeting that the Cabinet at its meeting Wednesday also discussed racial relations in the country.
“The Cabinet feels that racial tension may arise if sensitive issues are raised. The Cabinet has ordered ministries with laws pertaining to this to enforce them.
“If it is necessary, the ISA may be used on those who stoke racial tension,” he added.
Abdullah also told Barisan Nasional component parties to be firm and take disciplinary action on their members, who also made statements that stoked racial sentiments.
The meeting was held after Barisan component parties said they wanted “immediate and stern action” to be taken against Ahmad during a meeting of the coalition’s supreme council on Tuesday afternoon.
However, because it involved a party matter, they left it to Umno to act.
After stopping 10 busloads of his supporters on their way to the Putra World Trade Centre where the supreme council meeting was held, Ahmad said he would not retract his statements, but urged his supporters and all Malays to remain calm.
At a press conference, he said he accepted Umno supreme council's decision to suspend him, but added he would "make a comeback."
He accused Gerakan acting president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon of “raising temperatures” on the issue of race relations.
Dr Koh was one of the many leaders who had asked Ahmad to apologise to the Chinese community.
He also denied that he had torn down a picture of Dr Koh at a press conference on Monday.
The Prime Minister had said on Tuesday that the issue had caused uneasiness, worry and anger among the people.
“Some (component parties) expressed their disappointment over what transpired while some showed anger.
“All of us are of the view that Ahmad’s comments are not acceptable at all. What he said has caused anger and concern among the people, non-bumiputras and bumiputras alike, not just in the peninsula but also in Sabah and Sarawak,” Abdullah told reporters on Tuesday.
Ahmad stirred a hornet’s nest recently when he said in a speech while campaigning for the Permatang Pauh by-election that the Chinese were immigrants in the country and did not deserve equal treatment.
Despite criticisms from various community leaders, he refused to apologise.

Political weapon
Malaysia is well known for it's multi racial integrity and all of us are very proud of it but in today's malaysian politics multi racial community is weapon that being used.I am really disgusted with some of the leaders who is continously using racism to gather their support.Let them be the government or the opposition breaking people's unity just for their own benefit is just too much.We as the citizen of malaysia should reject this leaders. Anyone and everyone can try to break unity among us but if we give way to them then definitly other countries will also take advantage of this situation to invade us.Besides that all this instability also pays a big price in our economy where the investers are thinking twice to invest in malaysia.I think we should start building the integrity among us rather than support the leaders who is using it for their own benefit.We must learn to reject them....
